I need to check the web to see if the US Army ever did this with the M551 Sheridan. I doubt it though. The caption to this video says that the Russians perform airborne operations with the BMD crew inside. The vid is from Ria Novosti.
Americans can be just as crazy. More often than not we just do it on test & evaluation level, rather than on operational level. There's great difference between a busted tank on test range and a failed mission attributed to a busted tank.
More often than not we make sure that there's true operational merit in the stunt (eg HALO/HAHO - High Attitude Low/High Opening), rather than purely trying to max up on Bravado scale.
