Blast from the past. CH-37, the first USMC heavy lift helicopter.

  1. Apart from centre of gravity issues I wonder if there were other reasons that cockpit-over-cabin designs died out. This old helicopter seems so logical..........in a way MV22 never has!

  2. I guess at rear loading ramp meant its not needed? You don't see many fixed wing aircraft cockpit over/under cabin with out good reason.

  3. Yeah MV22 has serious design flaws, second generation tilt-rotors from boeing much better, they don't tilt entire engine... It also lacks the payload of some of the other helicopters, nor does it have the weapons capabilities of the Uh60 for instance. None of these designs are very appealing, they need to look at convergence upon transport and attack, like the HIND.

    1. We can add to this a staggering simplicity of this helo power plant. Two good old, radials. Nothing too fancy, simple and easy to maintenance engines. Yeah, lack the power but hey, In the "bush" I take simplicity over complex systems.

  5. Interesting to compare CH37 with Sea King for weight and lift. Dimensionally it is very similar to Merlin.

The more I see it the more like how it is arranged. Somebody is bound to come along and rain on my parade.

    1. i think its a bit larger than the merlin. this thing could carry a full size jeep internally. i don't think a merlin can do that. the main thing is that they had the cockpit over a full size cabin below. with the cockpit forward and in line with the cabin we've taken away valuable cargo space that the old timers utilized. i think we should go back to that.

  6. There was even an AEW version trialled!!! Long cabin for systems with flight crew above makes our UK baggers look a bit well wrong.

It also reminds me of the Fairey Rotodyne, not strictly a helicopter, but it too benefited from the mechanical bits not impeding on the cabin.
