Romanian Battalion fighting for new Russia in Ukraine?

Thanks MC for the link.

Battalion soldiers arrived in Donetsk to strengthen the ranks of those who have taken today opolcheniya.V oath of allegiance to the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk were foreign volunteers. One of the Romanian soldiers told LifeNews, that a whole battalion of Bucharest joined the army DNR because they stand for independence in any of its manifestations.
Wow on two counts.

First, if Romanians actually are fighting for "new" Russia then we're seeing a new kind of dynamic that I can't even begin to figure out.

Second, the separatists consistent.  If the overthrow of the old govt was considered a "yearning" for people to be free then how can the "yearnings" of the separatist be considered a bad thing?

Overall I thought we were heading to an endgame but it looks like a few more chapters are being written.  My hope for an end to hostilities is beginning to look more and more naive.

  1. Yeah, the battalion of 2 men and a half.

There ware vid's with two Spanish communists that join the Russians. They also were ready to form a battalion, with some 10 or 15 more men to come later.

    1. yea, the numbers are insignificant, if they're 10-15
the majority has a totally different view, we also have 20k russians in Romania spreaded all over the country, sooo(you don't even notice them, i didn't even knew we actually have them anymore)
could also be some from Moldova, who knows.
ofcourse the russian propaganda will make a big thing of it if atleast 1 was there.
the propaganda has a bigger impact than facts in this overall mess.

    2. Yeah, i would agree with Shas Vader ... 2 men and a dog don't make up a battalion, but it certainly helps to put some spin on things, sort of "international brigads" joining in to fight the evil fascists ...
there have been a couple of foreigners joining with the Seppos ... From a military point of view, this is not significant. Most of the international volunteers on the Seppo side don't have lot of field experience anyway (by international i'm not talking about the Russians fighting alongside them).
Only ex-western millitary I have heard of who joined the Seppos was a former French spec-ops guy (ex-NCO of their 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Rgt) and an-ex corporal from 27th Mountain Brigade, both with afghanistan and other operational experience.
In comparison with the hundreds of Russian military who took leave of absence to join Seppos, that sounds rather dire.

    3. Shas said "...battalion of 2 men and a half..."

Totaly agree! There are groups in both (pro-Ukranian and pro-Russian) sides, mostly look like weekend warriors than men who realize they are about to enter a War zone, who call themselves "battalion". In most cases, the "battalion" strength is about 6-10 men. A few days ago I watched a video on youtube, in which the "commander" of the "Italian battalion" (totaly 6 men), who earlier identified himself as a Benito Mussolini ideas supporter, said that his "battalion" came to support the Ukrainian "brothers". Lets not forget the "orthodox battalion" organized by few Serbian citizen who fight by the Russian side.

As I see, there are some nazionalism extremist or religion fanatic lunatics around Europe who got bored by watching 1980 era action films and decide to live the real thing. I would absolutely understand if they were PMCs who get paid thousands US dollars per week. I would understand if they were locals who get armed to fight against some enemy. But its totaly stupid to get into a War zone and possibly get wounded or killed for some "nazionalism" bullshit or to establish "our God" instead of "their God". These far-right lunatics or religion fanatics involved into an others-people-War, have no difference with the mujahedins.

    4. ...and also dont forget the "battalilon" of ONE (1) person, some middle-aged US citizen with no previous military experience, who traveled from US to Ukraine and entered into some local pro-Ukranian group to fight for his Ukranian (?) brothers.

    5. Only US citizen I heard of joining the Ukie troops is Mark Gregory Paslawsky, aka "Franko", but I thought he had served with US Army Rangers ? Must be someone else then ... Sol you heard anything about that story ?

    6. Yes, I am aware of Mark Gregory "Franko" Paslawsky who was a US volunteer in Donbas battalion (claimed to have 700 members) and shot dead on 19th August 2014 - his case is well known example. I am talking about a different US citizen (I am trying now to find the link where I read it from).

As for "Franko" (who became an Ukranian citizen before entering into Donbas battalion service - he was living in Ukraine for the last 20 years), as far as I remember from his interview on Vice News, he said that he had NO previous military experience. This "former Army Ranger" detail was first appeared first time on DailyMail article and arrises some questions about who said the truth and who lied. Franko during his interview or the DailyMail? After his death, Vice News also publish more info about him and said that "...he was a West Point graduate who served in the US Army Rangers for 10 years...". I dont know, but some details of the his story, does not fit right

    7. Yeah, they are too liberal with word "battalion". Only "Donbas" and "Azov" were in body strength of battalion or even reinforced one. Rest are sometimes as was mentioned not even in strength of fire team.

    8. There are also a few Poles who fight for Asia union in Ukraine.

  2. I'll bet dollars to donuts these guys are Trans Dniestr transplants. There may be a few Romanians who long for the clarity of the old Soviet days, but this is no battalion. I've seen volunteers from France, Germany, etc siding with the pro-Russian rebels.

I've also heard of Georgian and Belarus guys fighting on behalf of Ukraine in the Donbas Battalion as well.

If you added all of the foreign recruits of both side, I doubt you'd get more than a company.

As for "Franko", the Vice video mentioned he had military career at some point, but didn't specify. I am sure he wasn't trying to toot his own horn, because like you said, the West Point grad/Ranger stuff didn't come out til later.

  5. Revised, actually deleted my initial comment, after the video loaded. That guys is not Romanian, taking by his accent he is either Russian or Moldavian, probably one of the good guys sponsored by Moscow in Transnistria.
