Why is New York State increasing counter-terror measures? What do they know that we don't?

via governor.ny.gov
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today met with Legislative Leaders to announce a coordinated increase in security and law enforcement personnel at mass transit sites in the New York City region. This announcement is being made out of an abundance of caution, given the undeniable increase of terrorist activity abroad.
Wait.  This is bullshit.  We've seen an "increase in terrorist activity abroad" for over a decade.  Additionally, while ISIS has made threats they have been busy dealing with their latest conquests.

So what suddenly happened that made the governor of New York increase security?

Read the entire press release here, but this thing has the smell of increased terrorist chatter that identified New York as a target and officials are attempting to do a quiet hardening.

  1. E.B.O.L.A. Infected Ebola blood is for sale black market in Africa for use as a cure.
All it takes is a gallon sprayed in the right location that resembles simply water and you have a crowd killer.
Stand on a roof top with a pressure washer and spray the crowded streets below with what they think is water and infected thousands, who become vectors.
All it takes is a missing airliner with spray tanks attached, or a passenger list of infected crash landing intact to draw in first responders who quickly take every survivor to a hospital to infect the medical staff and others.
Perhaps those in charge are just jittery as hell because of the serious lack of competence in DC.
The US is gonna get hit, three holidays are coming up, any one could gather folks in crowds to be attacked.

  2. After the unSAFE Act and countless other gun-grabbing laws, I couldn't think of a better target. A Kenya style attack in midtown rush hour would be a like a hot knife through butter. NYPD is a force multiplier for ISIS--they routinely kill more innocent bystanders than bad guys then lie to cover it up.

Even in upstate NY, good guys are being disarmed and held down. All because Moms Demanded Action--hope those moms don't live or work in the city!

Australia was a great target for the same reason. The only check-and-balance comes from government agencies that can only respond after an event has begun. It doesn't matter how heroic your tactical fusion teams are when they are 30+ minutes away. What is the rate of fire of an AK again?!?

In the US, population density = citizen disarmament = prime target. You aren't going to hear chatter about such efforts in Texas, Utah, Wyoming, southern states, etc... Those states would issue ISIS tags and turn it into a sport. Ironically, those are the same states that produce our warriors who will be called upon to respond in the name of protecting NYC... So NYC can Liberals can Demand Action and vote away our rights, tying our hands.

    1. In Australia we have had a lot of radical local Ragheads join ISIS abroad and have fought in Syria and Iraq. The Prime Minister Tony Abbot has put in tough laws to stop these men from engaging in these activities. A number of plots including the other day they tried to bomb Parliament House in Canberra have been intercepted and Arrests made including one Muslim man who was going to grab people at random and chop there head of(http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-19/afp-to-take-over-parliament-house-security/5754718). Australia and America have had a great alliance since the Japanese bombed Darwin in WW2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Darwin). The Japanese back then where right on our doorstep getting as far south as Sydney Harbour with two midget submarines. Know we have an enemy that lives with us though thankfully a minority not all Muslims are this way but I can't carry a gun like in America so defending my family will have to be with my bare hands. Security and Police patrols have increased but one day the buggers might get lucky. I hope and pray that doesn't happen.

    2. I too pray that doesn't happen and agree that they will eventually get lucky. If government's laws and counter-measures are ineffective, or partially effective, what recourse do the folks have having been disarmed?

What level of success does government need to have in preventing terror to maintain it's gun control laws? If they are 90% successful, that is good. But did the 10% still deserve the right to defend themselves.

It's time we realize that terror isn't limited to CNN special reports and 9/11. It's street-level and pervasive. If all citizens had their natural right to self-defense intact, ISIS would have a harder time operating.

I would hope the folks in Australia demand their gun rights.

The folks in NYC have no such interest. Their former mayor spends money in my state (CO) trying to disarm me as if a near-prohibition in his own state isn't enough. This makes us targets against an enemy who is wiling to die for his cause.

  3. Unrelated, off topic.

    Sounds pretty ambitious:

  4. I don't think it means anything. Take a look at the SAFE act; how much crime has it actually prevented? Yet it keeps being trumpeted as an accomplishment. Cuomo has been rumored from time to time as a possible 2016 contender for the party ticket so maybe this is a way to burnish his security credentials. Call me cynical but after living in the state for so many years I think everything is political, right down to the local town dog catchers. Sending out a press release is not my idea of a "quiet hardening".

  5. Breaches of White House security did not give NYC much confidence in Homeland security being there until after the fact.
Sending out the press release is the fastest method of alerting good guys as well as bad guys.
Like saying, we know, and now you know we know what's planned.
That alone could prevent an event and save lives.
Had the Japanese gone to Pearl Harbor and saw bunkered in AAA anti sub operations being vigorously pursued and aircraft and ships dispersed in revetments they may have reconsidered the attack.
