Japanese 40mm CTA development under TRD.



I've been watching 40mm cannon development in Europe and the US but missed what the Japanese have been doing in the field.  Google Translate handles Mandarin quite well but screws the pooch hard on Japanese.  Don't know why but it does.

Having said that I just can't quite make out if this is independent work or if they're teaming with someone.  Additionally I'm seeing a new 8x8 but don't know if its just part of the "test bed" or if its headed toward a new build IFV.

  1. Chassis is probably just a repurposed test-bed. RoF on the gun is pretty impressive. As is the 'cluster' munition. Wouldn't want to be on the business end of that.

    Wonder why the barrel needs so much reinforcement though.

    1. noticed that too. the German's had issues with the Puma barrel so i'm just guessing that its dealing with the same stuff.

    2. Maybe the barrel's reinforcement is needed to prevent deviation of the barrel because of high temperature regimes. Maybe some problems with the barrel steel quality...

  2. The gun does not recoil, that is why it is so heavily reinforced. I never would have guessed. It gives that extremely high rate of fire but that has to be murder on those components that are forced to absorb those shocks.

    This just feels really odd to me. Is reinforcing the crap out of the barrel really better than doing away with the classic hydro-pneumatic recoil system? I would be very interested in the hard data between this a Bofors 40mm.

    1. Maybe it's easier to develop certain parts without worrying about recoil for now? No way that pyramid is going to make the production model. Too easy to snag on too many things.

  3. When you have a barrel that long and have a lumped mass at the front end, during firing on the move the barrel stabilization can degrade because of the barrel deflections. I believe the supports try to reduce that by increasing the stiffness.
