When did Hollywood get weapons training?

I watched a streamed version of the movie John Wick last night...I'm going to go see American Sniper this weekend (I think it comes out this weekend) and one thing struck me.

When did Hollywood get weapons training?

I mean seriously!  There were a few over the top moments in the John Wick film but you could see that someone taught Reeves some things.  If what I've heard about American Sniper is true then Bradley Cooper got training too.

While I still believe Hollywood hates gun guys and the culture, we're seeing something fascinating and its going unnoticed.

They're actually working at getting it right.

Oh and a sidenote from the John Wick movie.  They emphasized integrating close quarters combat with actual hands on fighting.  We practice close quarters combat all the time, but we don't integrate actually fighting close with weapons in hand.  To the USMC's credit it does the best job currently with its MCMAP program but its still lacking.  Is close in combat mixing weapon and hands on lacking or am I offbase and missed a course that teaches it?

  1. Well, Generation Kill seemed to have gotten it right. Looked convincing to my eyes. While I've had military training it was 30 years ago so my memory might be rusty.

  2. Yes I do see something fascinating. I see celebrities who trash guns yet pocket millions from movies that use guns. Bunch of hypocrites. Liam Neeson is the latest.

    1. Yeah, and there's always some sellout consultant willing to work with the turds. Granted it seems like it would be a fun job for a vet if you don't think too much about the kind of folks you were working with. Almost rather train with Syrians than hollywood types though....

  5. We implemented some mcmap with our cqb training a few months ago. Was a real good training tool. The only down side was the few injuries we had, but all in all great training an was really good to see some warrior spirt in my young marines. Fight or flight kicked in, and I was glad to see none faltered. (Yeah we didn't tell them the aggressors would be coming at them)

    1. you guys are the only unit that is actually doing real deal training then. everything else i've seen is so scripted that it must be both boring and not even training anymore. well done. but that's what i expect from FAST Co.

  6. The firefight in HEAT and MIAMI VICE, also the pistol skills of Tom Cruise in COLLATERRAL, they used an Ex-SAS to make it look reallistic.. still the best scenes for me personally

  8. Has anybody seen the Christian Bale movie called Equilibrium......and its pistol close combat/hand to hand fight scene?

  9. Equilibrium was cool, but the bank heist in Heat was the best. Val Kilmer performing tactical reloads under fire while moving and suppressing movement to his rear is book. I used that bit as an into for a CQB class.

  10. I've noticed the weapon handling skills demonstrated in a lot of movies has been almost LEO/Miltiary grade for some time now.

I think Inception was the first movies where I actually sat up and thought about it though. Throughout that movie all the actors demonstrate impressive weapon handling with a variety of weapons.
