Pictorial...McDonnell Douglas JAST

Below are photos of the McDonnell Douglas JAST concept, I got interested in it because in the ongoing debate about the 'new' Chinese stealth fighter (I'm of the opinion that its just a photoshop of the SU-47, TA-50 and perhaps alot of imagination) Sweetman referenced this airplane as perhaps being a design influence.  Images via JSF.mil

Dept of Defense strikes first??

Just a note.  I'm a HUGE supporter of our defense establishment.  Heck to be honest, I believe that a strong national defense is one of the FEW constitutionally mandated responsibilities of a nation.  Social welfare, national health insurance in my opinion are outside the scope of what a FEDERAL government is suppose to provide.

My politics and really no big deal...just my opinion and you have the right to agree or disagree...that's not the issue here.

What is at issue is this.

Have you noticed the latest news reports?

This from Information Dissemination regarding DF-21 (anti-ship ballistic missile) reaching initial operating capability... and ...

This from Aviation Week regarding the Chinese Stealth Fighter finally being revealed to the public.

The timing is strange...two news releases regarding startling new capabilities from the Chinese military when we were all told that they were at least 5 years away from having the DF-21 up and running and at least another 10 to 15 years away from having a credible stealth fighter???

Either our intelligence resources are woefully inadequate or we're seeing a sophisticated chess game being orchestrated by the DoD to protect resources.

Nothing stirs American passions than having a deadly foe to get ready to confront.

Have you heard this rumor? Australian Navy to get RN Bay Class LSD's!

Read the whole thing here at Australian Defence Magazine.  The operative paragraph...

“One of the Bays becoming available suits us perfectly: it saves us a fair bit of cash (budget is $150-200 million, and I’d imagine we’ll get one of the Bays for ~$70-100 million, bear in mind the dollar is strong at the moment too), and it’s available right now.
“Recall that at the moment the LPAs [Landing Platform, Amphibious] are experiencing some pretty major problems related to the age of the vessels, so getting the JP2048 P4C vessel into service by the end of next year would really get us out of a bind, since it’d allow the RAN to either repair only one of the LPAs or run the LSD(A) in parallel to the LPA but reduce the operational burden on the LPAs (the Bay class run with a crew of about 60 so the RAN should be able to man one without too much difficulty).”
This would be awesome.  In a few short years the Australian Navy can transition from a deterrent force with limited power projection capabilities to a full spectrum power house in the Pacific.  With the addition of the Bay Class from the UK, its Canberra Class LHD now being built the RAN will be extremely formidable.

Question.

If Argentina decided to annex the Falkland Islands in late 2012 (after all the cuts have been made and all the gear sold) could the British retake them as they did in the 80's?

Let me add this before you answer yes too quickly...take into account a US administration that doesn't view our 'special relationship' with as much reverence as some might hope...a stretched US military and the other EU nations being involved in Afghanistan or suffering from the economic downturn.

Its reasonable to assume that the UK would have to go this alone...do you really think they could?

I wonder.

No Harriers.

Typhoons operating at the very limits of their range with limited endurance over the contested areas.

A much diminished amphibious lift capability.

No Nimrods to do anti-sub patrols.

The medium term Royal Navy is full of risk...my vote on this subject.  Not only no, but hell no.

The only viable option would be to have their Parachute Battalion along with SAS and SBS retake the landing strip and hope that they could hold it until the Royal Marines could land.  Even in the 80's it was an iffy proposition and the line up was much much stronger.  If this scenario ever plays out then the Brits are screwed.

HondaJet. Any military applications?

Below is a vid of the new HondaJet that meets FAA guidelines.  I wonder if there are any military applications for a mini-business jet.  And I mean besides using it as a shuttle to move General's around in.  Maybe as a high speed UAV control ship?  Civil Defense?

IF the F-35B is cancelled...what then?

The F-32B!

If all the "haters" get their way and the Marine Corps is forced to do without the F-35B then what way to go?  Its quite simple...the F-32B!

Its been done before with the YF-17...

Boeing still has the molds to the airplane...

And perhaps most importantly, its not the airplane that the Marine Corps is wedded to but its capability, namely STOVL.

But I'm being academic...the F-35 is safe but its a fun glance at a crazy what if.

The ATTACK Aircraft Carrier...

I love this old school propaganda.  Can you imagine the US Navy calling one of its flat tops an Attack Aircraft Carrier today?

Dornier DO 31..

Imagine if this airplane used the engines from the X-32!  It would be able to hover without the need for additional podded lift jets.

It really does seem like nothing is new under the sun and the US Army and Air Forces future lift vehicle has already been solved...all we need to do is to add current tech to it.
